The Export-Import Bank of the United States announced the appointment of board member Dr. Rita M. Rodriguez to the position of Acting President and Chair effective March 31, 1997. Dr. Rodriguez has served on the Ex-Im Board of Directors since 1982 and is both an expert and author on international finance.

It has been an honor to serve the public interest for nearly 15 years. This agency makes a difference. It levels the playing field for U.S. companies competing in the international arena, said Acting President and Chair Rodriguez. Ex-Im Bank`s commitment to supporting American companies through proactive, customer-oriented export financing has never been stronger. I look forward to continuing our efforts to sustain American jobs through exports for the benefit of the nation`s economy.

As Acting President, Dr. Rodriguez will continue to work closely with Directors Julie Belaga and Maria M. Haley. I think Ex-Im Bank is fortunate to have such talented and dedicated directors as Julie Belaga and Maria Haley. Their knowledge and expertise, coupled with their dedication to the mission of Ex-Im Bank is a benefit to the Bank, our clients and our country, Rodriguez said.

In addition to her duties as Acting President, Dr. Rodriguez heads the Policy Group where she oversees policy development and coordination for countries and programs. She is also responsible for the formulation of Ex-Im Bank policy objectives and negotiating strategy with regard to international organizations such as the OECD, Berne Union and Paris Club.

The position of Acting President will be maintained until a new chairman is nominated by the President and confirmed by the United States Senate. Dr. Rodriguez succeeds Martin A. Kamarck, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Export-Import Bank of the United States, who resigned effective March 31, 1997.

Dr. Rodriguez is the author of The Export-Import Bank at Fifty, Foreign Exchange Management in U.S. Multinationals, and co-author with E. Eugene Carter, of International Financial Management. She holds a Ph.D. from New York University Graduate School of Business.
