SHARM EL SHEIKH, EGYPT – Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM) President and Chair Reta Jo Lewis, alongside Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and President of Romania Klaus Iohannis, Energy Minister Virgil Popescu, and Geoffrey Pyatt, Assistant Secretary at the State Department, announced the issuance of two letters of interest for U.S. exports being used at a nuclear power project in Romania. Chair Lewis also announced that EXIM’s support for climate finance surpassed $176 million in fiscal year 2022, its highest volume of authorizations for clean technology exports in years.

Egypt Meeting“Since I began my tenure at EXIM, I have made climate finance a priority,” said Chair Lewis. “EXIM is dedicated to supporting President Biden’s commitment to providing more than $11 billion in climate finance per year and I am proud to announce that, in 2022, EXIM provided the highest volume of climate finance support the agency has seen in years. I look forward to continuing the expansion of our outreach efforts as we – and other likeminded nations – work to combat climate change.

“Additionally, I am grateful for the partnership of Minister Popescu and SNN’s Cosmin Ghita and look forward to a strong working relationship over the next several years as the project comes to fruition,” said Chair Lewis.

In support of its Congressional mandates, in fiscal year 2022, EXIM authorized $176 million in support of environmentally beneficial exports and over $54 million for renewable energy exports.  These volumes are the highest in their respective categories in years and represent noteworthy increases over fiscal year 2021 levels, further demonstrating EXIM’s commitment to supporting the Biden-Harris Administration’s priorities.

EXIM is committed to increasing its financing in these key areas and today also announced a request for clean technology applications in order to increase its support for Congressional mandates and Biden-Harris Administration goals. This request for applications asks exporters, lenders, and foreign buyers to submit financing applications to EXIM for climate-related projects.

In line with the Administration’s commitments to the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment, the Global Methane Pledge and President Biden’s commitment to providing $11.4 billion in climate finance annually, EXIM is looking to support more climate-related exports of U.S. goods and services.
